T.P. 32/36 (a trial proof aside from an edition of 70, 5 artist's proofs, 5 printer's proofs, and 5 hors commerce)
Andy Warhol (1928-1987) Sandro Botticelli, Birth of Venus, 1482, from Details of Renaissance Paintings, 1984 Screenprint in colors on Arches paper 25 x 37 inches (63.5 x 94.0 cm) (image) T.P. 32/36 (a trial proof aside from an edition of 70, 5 artist's proofs, 5 printer's proofs, and 5 hors commerce) Signed and editioned in pencil, lower left Published by Editions Schellmann & Klüser, Munich and New York Printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, New York LITERATURE: Feldman & Schellmann, IIB.316-319. Andy Warhol's "Details of Renaissance Paintings" series, in which he reimagined classical works, often considered "high art," through a pop art lens, fuses past artistic sensibilities with pop's celebration of consumerism, cultural iconography, and mass production. Warhol's version of Sandro Botticelli's iconic "The Birth of Venus," employs his signature use of vibrant, complimentary colors and re-contextualizes the classical image for contemporary audiences. Heritage auctions is proud to offer this trial proof from the series. The Warhol trial proofs are unique or limited-run pre-production prints which were created during the early stages of producing a screenprint series. These proofs served as an experimental playground for Warhol, where he could test out different ink colors and screen combinations to see how they altered the mood and composition of the piece. The trial proofs offer a glimpse into Warhol's creative process, revealing how he manipulated images and experimented with his medium. They are often considered highly collectible because of their rarity and because they embody Warhol's hands-on experimentation with the mechanics of art reproduction, a theme that is central to understanding his work and its impact on both the art world and popular culture. This lot is accompanied by a copy of a certificate of authenticity from Martin Lawrence Galleries. HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
A gorgeous print of an iconic, art historically significant figure. Mild toning around matted edges radiating inward toward the central image; printed colors still appear vibrant. A few extremely small, minor marks within printed image. A few very small (1/16") foxing marks evident in recto margins under the matted area, primarily evident along lower right edge. Mild marks on verso with a few areas of adhesive remnants that present with mild staining; do not appear to impact recto image. Matted and framed under glass. Framed dimensions 41-1/2 x 53-3/8 inches. No tears or losses observed.
